Oh, the joy of being back in Venice. The Serenissima. The Bride of the Sea. Mary Shelley once wrote, “There is something so different in Venice from any other place in the world, that you leave at once all accustomed habits and everyday sights to enter an enchanted garden”.
Venice is indeed, as Mary Shelley quite rightly points out, an enchanted garden, albeit a garden with a Chelsea Flower Show crushing water feature. Nowhere comes close to Venice on pretty much any level: beauty, architecture, history, music, art, food (the food!!) wine… top of the class, in every category, in any year, in any school, anywhere.
If you’re going to ‘do’ Venice, then in our opinion, there is only one way. In style. Sure, you could come in the summer, squeeze yourself into some Vaporetti, stay in a 2-star pensione somewhere just off nowhere, dodge your way through a thousand selfie sticks and then go home relieved and none the wiser.
OR you could come to Venice in November when the weather is still gorgeous, the low Autumn sun magical and the tourists few. You can sing Venetian music and stay in splendid luxury while sipping martinis.
Hmmm, choices, choices.
Once your jet arrives at Aeroporto Marco Polo on our Venice classical singing holiday, you’ll be escorted directly by private boat straight to the door of your boutique hotel on the banks of the Canal Grande. Your luggage will be taken to your beautiful bedroom where you can relax in extreme comfort before convening for cocktails. Dinner as always will be in a thoroughly researched gem of a restaurant, away from the tourists and steeped in the honesty of local Venetian life.
Our mornings will be full of music. Our rehearsal room is in itself a little gem, situated next to our hotel and therefore on the banks of the Canal Grande. An inspiring and appropriate setting for Robert Dean to sprinkle his magical music dust and bring out the very best in our singing. After a delicious lunch, there will be ample time to explore the treasures of Venice that are quite literally on your doorstep. In the evening there will be a further shorter session of music, aperitivo and then dinner (generally in that order).
Our five night luxurious classical singing holiday in Venice will culminate with a performance by you in a magical venue. On our 2016 Singing Holiday to Venice, we sang in the beautiful and intimate San Giacomo dell’Orio followed by the splendour of San Marco. Both were fitting finales to an uplifting week. Follow that I hear you say! We’ll do our best 🙂
Stop the clocks!
Finding a great hotel in Venice is like locating the last pistachio in a bowl full of empty nutshells. Lots of disappointment but a great sense of achievement once you finally manage to lay your fingers on the last salty morsel.
Back in 2015 and after weeks of Internet research, we decided to recce this magnificent city. We opted to stay at the Hotel L’Orologio on the banks of the Canal Grande just off the Rialto. We thought we’d stick here for several nights and rummage through numerous other accommodation possibilities to find the perfect Singing Holidays place to stay. The Hotel L’Orologio had great reviews, but like the honeymoon night in an arranged marriage the inevitable body blow of dissatisfaction loomed ominously over any hearsay selection process.
We arrived at Santa Lucia station in the early evening having taken the train direct from Munich. A short walk later and we were outside our hotel. Expectations minutes before had been low but stop the clocks – from the outside at least the L’Orologio was looking rather excellent!
With its charming facade and warm, inviting reception (spied as it was through the numerous Canal Grande facing windows) we were suddenly feeling somewhat upbeat. Had we found the perfect pad already?? It would indeed be a first if we had! Maybe an arranged marriage wasn’t so hit and miss after all! Perhaps it wouldn’t be necessary to grin and bear it and think of England while desperately searching for the lowest light setting on the dimmer switch!
Well, indeed it wasn’t necessary! This is a super stylish hotel situated in what may very well be the perfect location in Venice. It’s rare to find a place that’s both right in the action yet private and somehow ‘tucked away’. The L’Orologio, however, is such a place. Just steps away from the Rialto and minutes from San Marco it somehow manages the impossible.
The rooms and the service here are second to none and the breakfast…well; it’s impressive! From Bucks Fizz to goji berries it seems to have everything. First-rate coffee (a must at any time of day), freshly juiced carrots, croissants, cake, a snazzy machine that keeps scrambled eggs perfectly cooked, pancetta, salsicce, fresh fruit salad, a million kinds of honey and yoghurt… it’s like a culinary Generation Game except without Bruce. It’s not the same without Brucey but, he’d want us to soldier on. So we will.
On our previous Classical Singing in Venice in 2016, The Orologio was a perfect choice. In fact, it has become a serious fave on the Singing Holidays calendar and, having been back once or twice since I’m happy to tell you that it is as good as ever.
This is a first-rate hotel experience and the perfect spot for the ultimate Classical Singing Break in Venezia in 2018.

EVERYTHING was done well. Nothing was too much trouble for Alex and Temi. The whole experience was really enjoyable and left me feeling so happy.I can’t wait to go on my next singing holiday!
'A memorable holiday!'
Singing by the beautiful Weißensee with the warm and hugely talented Unthanks delivered all that I’ve come to expect from holidays with Alex and Temi: a lovely setting, infectious good humour and the pleasure of music-making led by exceptional and delightful musicians. Throw into the mix an evening performance with local singers leading to a laughter-filled exchange of songs stretching into the wee hours and I’m left with memories of one of the most joyful experiences of my musical life.
Small is beautiful
We think it’s the little things in life that matter the most. That’s why we only take small groups on our singing holidays. We want you to eat in tiny restaurants where mamma still cooks the food and stay in cosy, exquisite nests that feel like home.
We want you to get the maximum from every opportunity – from the incredibly talented professionals who teach you right through to the inspirational performance spaces that might otherwise be inaccessible.
A small group allows us to focus on the little details that can make all the difference and on you as an individual rather than just a face in the crowd. Most importantly though, a small group engenders a warmth and intimate connection between ‘friends’ who just LOVE to sing.
