Better than dolphins!
We’re back in Vienna – the city of dreams and year on year voted the world’s most livable place with the highest quality of life. If you’re dreaming of the perfect holiday, then forget about that trip on the Orient Express or those two weeks swimming with dolphins because our Viennese five nights of classical music promises to be the numero uno bucket list event of a lifetime.
The highlight of this five-night classical music holiday in Vienna is a performance (by you) in one of the oldest and most important churches in the city. Like the bullseye on a cultural dartboard, our destination is the Michaelerplatz, home to the Hofburg Palace, the Spanish Riding School and our singing venue of choice, the Michaelerkirche.
Not only will you be singing in this famous venue, but you will be accompanied by members of the world famous Vienna Chamber Orchestra (I did say it was a holiday of a lifetime!).
The musical treats don’t stop there either. Included in your holiday will be two nights at two of the world’s absolute premiere and most historic music venues. First up, we’ll be going to a performance of Puccini’s masterpiece ‘Turandot’ at the Vienna State Opera. Among the starry line up of singers is the annoyingly good looking and charismatic tenor Roberto Alagna. He’s like a cross between Brad Pitt and Luciano Pavarotti. Fortunately for us, it’s the looks of Brad and the voice of Pavs. Beforehand we’ll be soaking up the atmosphere in grandiose style with drinks in the spectacular foyer.
At the stunning ‘Goldener Saal’ concert hall of the Vienna “Musikverein” (yes, that wonderful hall where they broadcast the New Year’s concert on television), we’ll be attending a performance given by arguably the best orchestra in the world, the Wiener Philharmoniker, with the legendary Zubin Mehta calling the shots.
On this five-night Luxury Classical Singing Holiday, we’ll be joined by guest conductor and great friend Robert Dean. Robert comes with an eye-watering amount of skill and experience and as a principal singing teacher at the Guildhall School of Music Robert has taught, and is teaching, many of today’s opera stars. He’s also an international conductor of note, and as leader of both the London Choral Society and Philharmonia Chorus, he has worked under the auspices of Solti, Rattle and Barenboim. He’s a real smarty pants!
Smartypants notwithstanding, Robert has a great sense of humour and, just in case you’re panicking, he’s a complete softy. His rehearsals are a reassuring mix of vocal technique and music learning. He’s delighted to help anyone and everyone so if you’re still vocally pinned to the shower curtain, Vienna may well be the perfect time to step into the warm towel of Singing Holidays bliss.
Our home from home is one of the coolest and chicest boutique hotels in Vienna situated in a quiet spot right in the heart of the city centre. This hotel is exceptional. In fact, the rooms are so luxurious and the breakfasts so amazing, it’s going to be quite an effort prising you away from them for our daily rehearsals!
After our morning session with Robert, we’ll have a light lunch before free time and the opportunity to take in some of the cultural highlights of the city such as the magnificent Kunsthistorisches Museum or the Schönbrunn Palace. Alternatively, you can sit back and soak up the atmosphere and yummy cakes in one of the many gloriously old-fashioned, turn of the century Viennese coffee houses. I know what I’ll be doing.
After recharging our batteries back in the comfort of our hotel, we’ll be dining out in one of the many superb Viennese restaurants offering scrumptious, traditional food with a contemporary twist. All this, of course, washed down with the delicious wine of the region.
As with all our Singing Holidays, you can be assured that we go the extra schnitzel to make your eating experience the very best and most authentic possible.
This holiday is more than a holiday. It’s the opportunity to be wholly immersed in the Viennese music scene, perform with internationally renowned professional musicians and experience a timeless music culture that only Vienna can offer.
Dolphins are amazing but this luxury classical singing holiday is genuinely unmissable.
The Hollmann is a small boutique hotel in a converted 19th-century Viennese townhouse. Its location is perfect, situated in the heart of the city in an area that feels both yesteryear and on trend. Cobbled squares and centuries of rich history are partnered with buzzing Viennese wine bars and celebrated cafe culture.
The Hollmann is a very relaxed place to stay and Andrea, Alex and Katharina are all on hand to make your stay the best ever! Rooms are quiet, luxurious and superbly equipped. A spa, garden and even a tiny cinema with eight carefully restored theatre seats give you plenty of options when it comes to the odd bit of pampering.
Foodwise the Hollmann has it well and truly covered. You decide what you’d like for breakfast, and the Hollmann chef (Mr Hollmann himself no less) will cook you (almost) anything you want. The breakfast menu changes every day (there’s a six-course option which can last for hours!), the coffee is the best in town, and everything is made on site (including the jam). Good isn’t it? That spa and gym might come in useful after all!
The Hollmann is one of those rare city hotels that remains intimate and focused on you the customer. A real home from home albeit with a spa, cinema, snazzy bedroom and multi-talented chef.
EVERYTHING was done well. Nothing was too much trouble for Alex and Temi. The whole experience was really enjoyable and left me feeling so happy.I can’t wait to go on my next singing holiday!
'A memorable holiday!'
Singing by the beautiful Weißensee with the warm and hugely talented Unthanks delivered all that I’ve come to expect from holidays with Alex and Temi: a lovely setting, infectious good humour and the pleasure of music-making led by exceptional and delightful musicians. Throw into the mix an evening performance with local singers leading to a laughter-filled exchange of songs stretching into the wee hours and I’m left with memories of one of the most joyful experiences of my musical life.
Small is beautiful
We think it’s the little things in life that matter the most. That’s why we only take small groups on our singing holidays. We want you to eat in tiny restaurants where mamma still cooks the food and stay in cosy, exquisite nests that feel like home.
We want you to get the maximum from every opportunity – from the incredibly talented professionals who teach you right through to the inspirational performance spaces that might otherwise be inaccessible.
A small group allows us to focus on the little details that can make all the difference and on you as an individual rather than just a face in the crowd. Most importantly though, a small group engenders a warmth and intimate connection between ‘friends’ who just LOVE to sing.
